Pool 4 of the Mississippi River

Pool 4 of the Mississippi is the largest pool in the upper Mississippi River. With the large expanse of Lake Pepin it is the most diverse pool as well. With two sections of the pool the north/south portions that fish like a river with current, wing dams and vast backwater sections. The Lake Pepin portion fishes like a lake as most of it has low to no current. Vast breaklines, shorelines and flats offer a variety of fishing opportunities.

Many species live in the Mississippi River. The most sought after target species are Walleye and Sauger. There is amazing Panfish and Bass fishing as well. Most of the Walleye and Sauger fishing is done on the main river portions and also Lake Pepin. Several different presentations for Walleye and Sauger can be used and are seasonal. From spring and fall jigging to crankbait trolling along with live bait in the warmer weather months. Panfish can be found in the main river, backwaters and Lake Pepin. Bluegill, Perch and Crappies offer a lot of fun and great table fair. They can be found on wing dams, wooded areas, weedlines and rocks. A simple bobber and a piece of night crawler is sometimes all you need to catch all of these. A small jig and a panfish plastic can be a deadly combo as well. Large and Smallmouth Bass can be found almost anywhere. Weedlines, wooded areas and rock shorlines are good places to look. They offer great action especially when the dog days of summer come about. Spinner baits, jig and plastic, and even top water are effective ways to boat fish.
